Rumu Naik, 60, is a farmer from Keonjhar district in Odisha. Like millions of smallholder farmers across India, his livelihood, his family's food security, and his daily sense of purpose are all tied to his land. Farming demands constant vigilance - watching the condition of crops, reading the soil, managing tools and irrigation, and responding quickly to what the fields need. All of this requires clear eyesight.
But for years, Rumu had been managing with progressively worsening vision. The work became slower and harder. Tasks that required accurate sight - identifying pests, assessing crop health, even safely using equipment - became difficult. He continued as best he could, but the gap between what he was capable of and what the farm needed was quietly growing.
"A farmer's hope was restored - one pair of spectacles at a time."
When Care Netram organised an eye camp in his area, Rumu attended. His eyes were tested carefully and a prescription was identified. He received a pair of spectacles suited to his vision needs - the first proper correction he had experienced in years.
The improvement was dramatic and immediate. Objects that had been blurred came into sharp focus. He could assess his fields with the accuracy his work demanded, move more confidently, and work more effectively throughout the day.
Rumu returned to his fields with a renewed sense of capability. For a 60-year-old farmer whose land is everything, regaining the ability to see it clearly was not a small thing - it was everything restored.
